Fines and tickets with a rental car in Austria: how it works

Nobody plans to get a ticket — but if it happens, here is exactly what to expect. Transparent, with no surprises.

How a fine finds you

Speed-camera fines and parking tickets in Austria are addressed to the vehicle's owner — that is, the rental company — by post, sometimes weeks or even months after the trip. By law we provide the authorities with the driver's details from the contract, and the fine is assigned to the driver. That's why it's important that the contract names the person who was actually behind the wheel.

Who pays

All fines, tolls and parking are the renter's responsibility, including when the notice arrives after the rental has ended. If you paid something on the spot (parking, a tunnel, a toll section), keep the receipt and let us know — it helps us reconcile everything quickly.

How to avoid a fine: speed limits   

• 50 km/h — in built-up areas
• 100 km/h — on country roads
• 130 km/h — on motorways (Autobahn)

In Vienna almost the whole city centre is a paid short-stay parking zone (Kurzparkzone). Our advice: park in underground car parks — that takes the risk of a ticket and towing off your plate, and the car sits in a safe, well-lit spot.
