What to do in case of an traffic accident
1. Turn on the signal lights and place warning signs in front of the accident site.
2. Report the accident to the traffic police (for EU countries, a single number in all emergency cases - 112).
3. In case there are victims:
a. Call an ambulance (for EU countries - 112)
b. Before the arrival of the ambulance crew, provide all possible assistance to the victims.
4. Try to obtain from other participants the European form of the Accident Statement and complete it (see below for recommendations on filling it in)
5. Do not sign any documents whose purpose and content you do not understand!
6. If you cannot fill out the European Accident Statement form or obtain a copy of it, please, note the number plate(s) and brand(s) of vehicles (and trailers) of all participants in the traffic accident.
7. Provide other participants of the traffic accident, who intend to submit a claim for damages, a tear-off copy of their Green Card, or in its absence, provide the Green Card number, address and telephone number of the national Bureau of the "Green Card" of the country in which the traffic accident occurred. From other participants in the traffic accident, you will also receive information on their vehicle insurance policy.
8. It is recommended to take pictures of the traffic accident, vehicles and its damages as wells its participants and their insurance numbers.
9. Please, obtain from the traffic police a document confirming the fact of an accident (if the issuance of such a document is provided for by the law enforcement authority of the country in which the accident occurred).
10. Please, inform about the traffic accident the foreign Green Card Bureau (if you do not need to do this, please, see the back of your Green Card. You will also find the contact details of the Bureau).
12. Report an accident to your car rental company.
13. Keep the documents confirming the expenses occurring in the traffic accident (in a number of countries, if you are a recognised victim, you will be able to claim reimbursement of expenses on the basis of these documents).
Tips for completing the Accident Statement form
Preferably using a ballpoint pen, fill in either the blue or yellow part of the Traffic Announcement (For example, a French driver can fill out his part of the application form in French, leaving the unfilled part of the Notification of Accident that you will fill in in your language). You will understand the meaning of the questions, if you compare it with your document).
Please, keep in mind:
a. Clearly note (in paragraph 10) the location of the initial car hit;
b. Put the cross (X) in each corresponding cell on your side (paragraph 12)
Write the total number of cells marked with a cross.
c. Draw a diagram of the car accident (paragraph 13), indicating all the necessary information.
When you are convinced of the accuracy of the facts presented, please, sign the Notice and obtain the signature of the other driver (paragraph 15).
Take a copy of the completed form of the accident notification. (Or take a photo of it)
