Austrian toll routes — Streckenmaut
The vignette on your rental car is already paid and covers normal motorways (Autobahn) and expressways (Schnellstraße). But it does not cover the special alpine sections — tunnels and mountain roads. On these you pay a separate toll every time you pass
Where you pay separately (open all year)
| Route | What it covers | Car, one way |
|---|---|---|
| A13 Brenner | Innsbruck → Italy (Brenner Pass), the whole A13 | €12.50 |
| A10 Tauern | Tauern & Katschberg tunnels (Flachau–Rennweg) | €15.00 |
| A9 Pyhrn — Bosruck | Bosruck tunnel (Spital a. Pyhrn area) | €7.00 |
| A9 Pyhrn — Gleinalm | Gleinalm tunnel (towards Graz) | €12.00 |
| A11 Karawanken | Karawanken tunnel (Villach → Slovenia) | €9.00 |
| S16 Arlberg | Arlberg road tunnel (St. Anton–Langen) | €13.00 |
| Felbertauern | Mittersill ↔ Matrei (Salzburg ↔ East Tyrol) | €13.50 |
Please note: the A9 Pyhrn has two separate tunnels (Bosruck and Gleinalm), each charged separately.
Seasonal mountain roads (usually summer, separate operators)
- Grossglockner (Großglockner Hochalpenstraße) — ~€46.50
- Timmelsjoch — ~€20
- Gerlos (Gerlosstraße) — ~€13
- Nockalmstraße — ~€25 per day
- Silvretta (Silvretta Hochalpenstraße) — closed for renovation (roughly until 2030)
If your route runs over one of these roads, check the current price and opening times in advance.
How to pay
At the toll point — by card or cash — or buy a digital ticket (Streckenmaut online) in advance at asfinag.at. A rental car has no prepaid ticket for these sections, so at the toll point always use the "Buy ticket / Maut" lane (pay on the spot), not the "Prepaid only" lane — that one is only for drivers who already bought a digital ticket.
An open barrier does not mean "free"
Even if the barrier is raised or the lane has no barrier at all, you must still pay. Passing without paying is toll evasion: a replacement toll (Ersatzmaut) of about €200 applies, and if left unpaid it can rise to €3,000.
Important for your rental: the vignette on the car is included, but these alpine sections are the driver's own cost. Pay on the spot and keep the receipt.
Prices are approximate, for a car up to 3.5 t, one way (2026 rates). It's easy to check the current amounts at asfinag.at.
